The CENTRAL network (Central European Network for Teaching and Research in Academic Liaison) was founded in 2014 on the initiative of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, together with the Universities of Vienna and Warsaw, Charles University in Prague as well as ELTE Budapest. The network strives to promote academic projects and events, to establish joint study programmes and to promote exchange in research, teaching and at the level of institutional management.

The partner universities each have long and intensive bilateral links with one another. Due to their status as capital city universities, their history, geographic location and their similar profiles, the five universities have joined forces in order to form a multilateral research and teaching network and to increase the academic standing of Central Europe. The focus of the network is the promotion of young researchers, strengthening of international research cooperation as well as collaboration and exchange at the level of management and administration at the partner institutions.

CENTRAL is financed until 2018 by the DAAD "Strategic partnerships" funding programme with approximately 1 million Euros in funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In 2018, CENTRAL was granted follow-up funding of approx. 240.000 Euros for two more years by the DAAD.
