What do the protests in Iran have to do with us

What does this new protest movement mean - for Iran, but also for Germany? How do people abroad view the protests in Iran? Who is taking to the streets in Germany to show solidarity with the protests in Iran? And what does the Iranian diaspora in Germany expect from German politics?

We discussed these questions with our panelist.

Panelists:

 

Neda Soltani

has lived in exile since 2009. She is committed to academic freedom and the right to education. In Iran she was a junior professor of English-language literature. She is currently working as a consultant for endangered researchers at the International Scholar Services (ISS) of the Humboldt University in Berlin.

 

Dr. Arash Sarkohi

born in Tehran, did his doctorate in philosophy at the Free University of Berlin. He has been working in the German Bundestag since 2014, since 2022 as the coordinating officer of the human rights working group of the SPD parliamentary group. Sarkohi is the author of several publications on contemporary Iranian history and politics and is also active as a writer.

 

 

Bahar Oghalai

is a social scientist and researches migrant feminism in Germany at the University of Koblenz-Landau. She is a research associate at the Alice Salomon University and a former employee of the DeZIM Institute.

 

 

Niema Movassat

is a lawyer and sat in the German Bundestag for DIE LINKE from 2009 to 2021. He was deputy chairman of the German-Iranian parliamentary group. He was also a member of the party executive of DIE LINKE until June of this year.

 

 

Moderation: Gilda Sahebi
is a trained doctor and studied political science. She works as a freelance journalist specializing in anti-Semitism and racism, women's rights, the Middle East and science. As an author, she writes for the taz and works for the WDR, among others.
