UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Ordesa-Viñamala (Spain)

The study area includes 11 towns with about 6000 inhabitants and more than one million tourists per year. Culturally, the livelihood of rural populations depends on pasture-based mountain livestock farming. The area is home to unique species of flora and fauna within the regional and international context, many facing threats. There is an alarming reduction of biodiversity loss due to decrease in landscape heterogeneity. The Reserve is experiencing an expansion of wolves from Italy and bears from France though the Pyrenees, due to the reintroduction programmes in France. Finding effective solutions is a challenge, but all stakeholders agree to explore the value of nature based solutions.
