Representation

“Representation” is the title of one of the subprojects of Katharina Spalek’s ERC project “Focus Alternatives in the Human Mind: Retrieval, Representation, and Recall”. We know that focus alternatives play a role during human sentence comprehension: Focus alternatives are recognized faster in reading tasks, they are strongly activated in our mind and they are remembered better than the same words when they are not focus alternatives.

In the present subproject we are interested in the question which part of the brain encodes the information that a given word is (or is not) a focus alternative. First results point to a role of the precuneus in the processing of focus alternatives. The precuneus is a structure in the parietal cortex, and it is also involved in the processing of connected text.
