Pioneers: Judith Butler
In this case study researchers from Poland and Germany will explore the reception of Judith Butler, one of the pioneers of queer theory. With a view to determine and compare local specificities and trajectories, they concentrate on the role of the respective translation of Butler’s works, on the inclusion of her work in anthologies and the use of her thought in scholarly publications.
Researchers: Eveline Kilian, Karolina Krasuska
-
Pioneers: Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick
Despite Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s stellar status in the English-speaking world as a founding queer theorist, only few of her essays have been translated due to intersecting hegemonies of reception based on such factors as origin, field, and methodology (e.g. her opaque writing style, her focus on English prose, her reliance on particular psychoanalytic theories). The work package will focus on Sedgwick’s reception in Germany and Poland.

The Queer Canon in University Curricula
This project will research the institutional and theoretical frameworks in which queer theory has been taught at Polish and German universities since 1990 by surveying curricula and syllabi of programs and courses in each country. The question of whether Polish and German academia have produced specific ‘queer canons’ that are different from the US-American canon will be discussed in relation to (local) intersectional issues like gender, race and class.

Queer Theory in Polish Studies and Polish Literary Antecedents
Based on expertise in literary criticism and Polish literary history the work package allows to focus on the adaption of queer theory by Polish literature scholars. Emphasis will be on how queer criticism has been marked by an intersectional approach that includes, among others, feminist perspectives and revisioning of national and ethnic, as well as gender and sexual identifications.

Queer Theory in English and American Studies Publications in Poland
English and American studies have been an important route for queer theory’s entry into Polish academia, partly because of this subdiscipline’s substantial size and greater theoretical diversity relative to other modern languages. The work package surveys queer criticism on the Anglophone literary and cultural canon written by scholars in Poland.
Researchers: Aleksandra Malinowska (queer temporalities), Przemysław Gorecki, Anna Kurowicka
-
The Local Diversification of Queer Theory in Germany
This work package is dedicated to the diversification of queer theory both in US and German academic contexts and will investigate the rich network of exchange and interaction of US-American queer theory with local theory production across time.
Researchers: Janin Afken (antecedents), Felix Schmidt (queer temporalities; queer space; neoliberalism)
-
The Feminist Reception of Queer Theory in Germany and Poland
This work package will revisit the feminist reception of queer theory in Germany and in Poland, in order to situate the project in the context of local feminist traditions and thus emphasize the continuities and mutual productivities of feminist and queer theory.

Demotic Literature of Local Queer (Sub)cultures
Activist publications, such as manifestos, zines, comics and various ephemeral writings that exemplify “vernacular radicalism” will be examined in this work package. They illustrate grassroots activism responding to local need with a theorization of local specificity, and addressing local audiences in local languages.

-
Digital Queer
The impact of different media on the use and production of queer theory and concepts in the context of queer activism in a broad sense, notably the changes initiated by the internet as an increasingly popular medium of communication and dissemination will be addressed in this work package. It will be in dialogue with the predominantly print-based work packages around demotic literature of local queer (sub)cultures.
