About the Workshop

 

Dates: 12. - 14. September 2018 (Wednesday to Friday)

Place: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Erwin Schrödinger Center (Room 0'119), Campus Adlershof, Berlin, Germany

 

Quantum technologies have the potential to advance many applications in space, such as navigation, time and frequency distribution, Earth observation and planetary remote sensing, precision ranging, communication and networks, as well as fundamental physics. Small satellites have recently gained more and more attention in and outside the space community. Reduction in cost, increase in performance and the possibility to realize short mission development times make this satellite class predestined for demonstrating fundamental science and enabling technologies in space.

However, the demonstration of corresponding instruments (atomic clocks, inertial sensors, non-classical light sources) and underlying principal technologies on small satellite platforms remain a challenge. Application-driven requirements on the payload in combination with the limited SWaP (size, weight and power) resources on-board a small satellite demand interdisciplinary strategies with input from physics and engineering.

The 3-day KOSMOS workshop "From Quantum to KOSMOS" includes talks in dedicated sessions and working groups on research in the field of optical quantum technology for space applications. It aims at addressing scientific and technical as well as strategic questions. Four main topics form the context of the workshop:

 

  • Applications of OQT on small satellites

  • OQT demonstration in relevant environments

  • Technology developments and OQT industry

  • Small satellite platforms for OQT
