Large carnivores such as the lynx and brown bear represent the top of the food chain in the reserve. Brown bear was reintroduced and wolf is gradually repopulating the area, both species cause human-wildlife conflicts. Numerous villages are located on the valley floors and lower slopes, many of which are of considerable historic and architectural value. The human population in the reserve amounts to approximately 16,000, but doubles in the summer due to seasonal tourism, the main economic activity in the region. The region is home to 800 companies in the agriculture sector. The reserve includes Mediterranean vegetation and climate near lakes environment (including Garda lake, the biggest Italian lake) and also alpine mountain environments. Moreover it is located in an ecological corridor for migratory birds with well -established stopovers in the area. |
