Call for Applications: Intercultural Training at ELTE Budapest

The trainings aim is to promote intercultural communicational skills and competence for those staff members of higher education institutions who work with international students and staff on a day-to-day basis and have at least one-year work experience in this area. Participation will be limited to two persons per (partner) institution. The event will take place from May, 20-24th at ELTE Budapest. Applications are possible until February, 15th.

Call for Proposals to apply for funding of your CENTRAL workshop 2019

Over the course of the year 2019 CENTRAL project funding will support joint research proposals from universities represented in the CENTRAL network which clearly integrate junior researchers. Please find further information here.

 


 

Conference "Memory in Post Conflict Societies in Central and Southeastern Europe", 23.-25.10.2018

In joint cooperation with Südosteuropagesellschaft e.V. and under the direction of Prof. Christian Voß over the course of three days Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin hosts a conference on memory cultures in post-conflict societies. Further program details please find here.

 


International Autumn School "Variation in Language Corpora", 25.-27.10.2018

International experts in corpus linguistics and students of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will discuss and collaborate on the topic of "register variations". Further information here.

DAAD will support the CENTRAL Network for two more years

CENTRAL has successfully applied for DAAD follow-up funding within the funding programme 'Strategic Partnerships'. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will support the network for two more years from 2019-20.

*New* Call for Applications: CENTRAL Scholarships for 'Incomings'

We are happy to announce that CENTRAL Scholarships for are now also available for doctoral candidates from the University of Warsaw, the University of Vienna, Charles University or ELTE Budapest that wish to spend a one-month research visit at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The application deadline is 31 August 2018.

Workshop 'Automorphic Techniques in Arithmetic Geometry' in October

The concluding workshop of CENTRAL subproject 'Automorphic Techniques in Arithmetic Geometry' will take place at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin from 8 - 11 October 2018. The aim is to present some current research topics using automorphic techniques in arithmetic geometry pursued at the various CENTRAL partner universities. Find the announcement here.

 


Summer University 2018 at ELTE Budapest

The ELTE in Budapest organises a Summer University for Hungarian and international students from 13 - 19 August 2018. The event, held in English, will offer seminars and courses in various fields of study. Application deadline is the 1st of August. You can find more information on ELTE’s website.

If your application is successful you can apply for CENTRAL funding for travel and accommodation expenses (up to a fixed amount). Please contact the CENTRAL coordinator at Humboldt-Universität for more details.

 


Network East-West is organising Summer Schools for Law Students in Prague, Budapest and Berlin

The Summer Schools in Prague, Budapest and Berlin are designed to give students from Humboldt-Universität and the respective hosting university the chance to discuss juridical questions in internationcal contexts. The seminars held from 6 - 9 August will deal with the topic 'Law and Intuition' (ELTE in Budapest) and 'Thougths are free? - Protection and Boundaries of the freedom of opinion, freedom of press and freedom of public broadcast'  (Charles University).

 


Three successful CENTRAL-Kolleg applications in 2018

Three Kollegs have successfully applied for funding in 2018. Junior researchers and students from all five partner universities will collectively work on the following topics:

 

  • Seeing with your heart: Influences of cardiac cycle on perceived distances to threatful and harmless objects - A study in immersive virtual reality
  • To Begin with... Dialectics, Materialism and Mathematical Formalism in Hegel and Badiou
  • Cultivating Cosmopolitanism in the Nationalist Era: Central European Capital Cities (1879-1940)

Summer Seminar 'Nationalism, Religion and Violence'

The Charles University and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are organising a Summer Seminar on 'Nationalism, Religion and Violence' in Prague from 18 - 19 June. Prof. Christian Voss, organiser of the CENTRAL subproject "Summer School on 20th Century History", will be taking part as a lecturer.

 


Call for applications: CENTRAL scholarships

Until 30 June 2018, doctoral candidates at Humboldt-Universität studying in any field can apply for one-month scholarships for research visits at the CENTRAL partner universities. More information can be found here.

 


Workshop: Spatial Structure in Present-Day Literature

From 25 till 26 May, researchers and students from the University of Vienna, the University of Warsaw and Humboldt-Universität will be meeting in Berlin as part of the CENTRAL project "Transformations and Transfers: Spatial Structure and its Dynamic Sampling in Literature," which takes the form of a workshop lasting several days. This literary workshop is linked with a series of events that have been held since 2016 at all the universities involved.

 


Workshop: Machine Learning in Economics

The international workshop “Machine Learning in Economics” will be held at Humboldt-Universität from 17 till 18 May 2018 and is part of the CENTRAL subproject "Modelling Dependencies in Ultra-High Dimensions."

 


5th International PhD forum on Eastern European Art History

On 4 May, the "5th International PhD forum on Eastern European Art History" will be held at Humboldt-Universität. This forum is aimed at doctoral candidates worldwide working in relevant fields and offers a space for academic exchange and networking. There are more than 80 participants expected in 2018.

 


CENTRAL is participating in workshop in Brussels

On 16 April 2018, CENTRAL is one of five European university networks chosen to participate in the workshop "European University Networks. Regional groupings, thematic networks or strategic alliances? A contribution to the development of the concept of ‘European University Networks’". The workshop, organised by the DAAD, the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and the German Permanent Representation to the European Union, is a contribution to the the current debate, launched by the French President Macron, on "European universities," which is now being discussion at the EU level.

 


CENTRAL Governance Meeting 2018

With the fifth CENTRAL Governance Meeting, the network seeks to resume its efforts for direct and personal communication at the management level. The host for 2018 is the University of Warsaw, which, between 5 and 6 April 2018, will welcome representatives from the management levels of all the CENTRAL universities to the Polish capital. The development of the network thus far as well as fundamental strategic decisions regarding structural realignment are, among other things, integral parts of the agenda.

 


International Staff Training Week - Warsaw

The University of Warsaw will host their 9th International Staff Training Week "Cross-Cultural Communication. Resolving Conflicts in a Multicultural Society" from 4-8 June, 2018. The programme is aimed at administrative staff members from Warsaw's partner universities, including Humboldt-Universität.

Intercultural Training at ELTE Budapest

Eötvös Loránd University is inviting interested staff members of higher education institutions to a five day intercultural training from 11-15 June, 2018. The programme organised by the Erasmus+ and International Programmes Department and the Institute of Intercultural Psychology and Education (IIPE) aims to promote intercultural communicational skills and competence for those working with international students and staff on a day-to-day basis. Participation is limitited to two persons per partner university.

European Summer School Prague, 15th-25th July 2017

The European Summer School in Prague is an intensive 10 day learning programme focused on European integration. This year’s European Summer School is titled “Challenged Union: Making sense of the troublemakers”

Opening ceremony at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin: Interdisciplinary Center for Transnational Border Research - Crossing Borders, 24th January 2017

On 24th January 2017 the new interdisciplinary center for transnational border research will open. Within the ceremony Prof. Arjun Appadurai will give a lecture on "Major Fears, Minor Numbers: The Anxiety of Refugees In A Post-Democratic World".

Two CENTRAL-Kollegs successfully realized in 2016

The CENTRAL-Kollegs are student research teams which are initiated and supervised by young researches who independently develop and carry out a project which spans the universities. In 2016 two CENTRAL-Kollegs have been realized successfully.

 


CENTRAL Network Expresses its Support for Academic Freedom and Supports Eötvös Loránd University’s Statement

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE)’s partners in the Central European Network for Teaching and Research in Academic Liaison (CENTRAL) – University of Warsaw, University of Vienna, Charles University, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin – support the statement that was published by ELTE on 3rd April 2017 regarding the Central European University.

 


Staff Mobility Programme - Second Staff Mobility exchange in the CENTRAL network

21 - 23 November 2016: In 2016, the Staff Mobility Programme offers the employees of the research offices of all universities involved in the CENTRAL network the opportunity to exchange information on the joint acquisition of third-party funding.

 


100 years of Hungarian Language

18 -19 November 2016: Conference on the history of science and the methodology of Hungarian Studies, the transfer of knowledge and culture between Hungary and German-speaking countries as well as literary relations between Hungary and German-speaking countries.
