Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve (Bulgaria)

Central Balkan Biosphere Reserve (Bulgaria)

The reserve has a high species diversity, resulting from a substantial elevation gradient and differences in the microclimate and habitats; the mountain crest is an important water divide for the two main catchment areas for Bulgaria – the Danube and the Aegean. In the reserve, traditional pastoral systems are still maintained, such as the breeding of horses in the Stara Planina area. Horses are roaming freely, and depredation by large carnivores frequently occurs. Illegal killing of wildlife and fishing occur frequently in the reserve. In addition, off-road traffic by ATVs, motorcycles and trucks is increasing, and causes substantial disturbance to wildlife as well as nature-based tourism.
